Trains and Subways
The way to take trains
In Tokyo, there are many railway services, such as; JR, private railways, Tokyo Metros, and Toei subways. These have different stations and their connections are complicated, but the ways to use them are almost the same.
1.Buying a ticket
First, go to a ticket machine around the ticket gate of the station and buy a ticket there. The fare tables and the route maps are on the walls above the machines. It is easy to use the touch-screen ticket machine which also has an English display option.
2.Going through a ticket gate
Most train stations use automatic ticket gate. Insert the ticket into the slit and work through. After you pass the gate, your ticket will come out from the forward slit. Since you will need the ticket at your destination, take the ticket and keep it with you.
3.Arriving at the destination
When you come to your destination, insert the ticket into the ticket gate again. If the gate gives a warning and prevent you from going though it, you may have to adjust the ticket fare. Go to the fare-adjustment machines beside the gate and pay the extra fare by following the machine operation.
4.SF Metro card
The SF Metro card is compatible with PASSNET, the cooperative railway prepaid card system. It can be used on most railway lines.
You can also use a PASSNET card purchased from another railway operator on the Tokyo Metro subway lines. They can be purchased at automatic ticket vending machines, SF Metro Card vending machines, station offices, or kiosks.
There are four types: the 1,000 yen card, 3,000 yen card, 5,000 yen card and 500 yen commemorative gift type, all for adults only. You can pass through the ticket gate, or buy extra tickets at ticket vending machine by inserting the card.
