The driver's license for foreigners


International Driving Permission.

Foreigners can drive a car in Japan with an international driving permission.
It is valid for one year from the data of issue. You have to get it in your home country before you leave for Japan.
However, please keep in mind that the permits of a few countries, such as Belgium, France, German, or Switzerland, are not valid in Japan because of the Geneva Convention of 1949.

Japanese Driver's license

In case your driver's license is issued by Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK., you can get a Japanese license without taking an exam.
Just go to the local license center, hand in an official translation of your license, take an eye test and prove that you have lived more than 3 months in the country where your license had been issued.
In such a case where your driver's license is issued by The U.S., China, or Brazil, you have to take a written and practical driving exam. Even if you are an experienced driver, you have to go to the local license center a few times. The process of taking the exam takes several weeks.
